I did a 2 week long externship at County Line Veterinary Clinic during my fourth year of veterinary school. I truly feel that this externship was the best rotation throughout my entire fourth year. I was able to stay with Dr. Fowler and her husband at their house during my externship which was a huge help coming from an out-of-state school. At this clinic, the entire staff treated me like a doctor and allowed me to learn in such an accepting environment. I was able to manage patients as the lead doctor and given the time to think through cases as I needed. I was also given my own portion of the schedule each day to learn how to go through scheduled appointments, drop offs, and surgeries. In surgery I was able to perform spays and neuters on animals from a local rescue and laceration repairs on a few animals that needed it. CLVC also has an added physical therapy component (my favorite part) which allowed me to think of treatment plans for orthopedic issues outside of the normal rest/NSAIDs/surgery regime. I was also given the unusual circumstance of managing a patient that was surrendered to the clinic. He was a feral cat with an abscessed foot that resulted in through and through puncture wounds, torn tendons in the paws, and limited mobility. I was able to treat him with both medications and physical therapy (shockwave therapy, laser therapy, stem gel, water therapy) to help him heal his paw. Everyone at this clinic was very willing to teach me what they knew and listen to any ideas I had on how to treat a patient. The staff at this clinic is incredible and it shows. They are a very efficient team and will cater your externship to YOUR goals. I believe this externship was the best thing I could have done for my confidence as a vet and I would absolutely recommend it to anyone looking to go into general practice!
